Has it been a long time since you renewed your HVAC (Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) system? Maybe it doesn’t work as well as it used to, and your electricity bills show it. It may be a good time to consider your HVAC Upgrade.

By upgrading to a high-performance HVAC system and taking other steps to reduce cooling costs, such as performing regular maintenance along with other outdoor conditioning tasks in your home, you can help decrease the energy utilization of your HVAC system to a great extent.

Below are the seven ways you can decide if it is time to upgrade your HVAC system to a more effective choice.

1) Your HVAC system is a decade old.

With proper regular maintenance, a central air conditioning or heat pump system can last 15-20 years. But as it matures, it also starts to deteriorate and uses more energy, and cools less efficiently, even if it technically still works. Given the improvements in modern HVAC technology, today’s units are much more effective, almost 30% more. More modern systems also have programmable, digitized thermostats that are simple to practice and assist in making your home much smarter.

2) Your electricity bills go up.

It is inevitable that your HVAC system will become too old and/or damaged to function as before. If an HVAC unit becomes incompetent, it consumes more energy to arrive at the desired temperature. While you apply further energy to perform air conditioning, you’ll notice that your energy bills will also keep increasing. In case you’re wasting money on system maintenance while your energy bills are rising, you require an HVAC upgrade.

3) The system has a SEER below thirteen.

The most effective air conditioning systems of today hold a SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating) higher than sixteen. The average SEER rating for the units produced after 2006 is thirteen. By today’s measures, anything below thirteen is inefficient and you should consider the purchase new equipment with a modern HVAC design to save energy costs in the future.

4) Your HVAC system makes unusual noises.

In case you hear strange noises coming out of your heating and cooling system, this could be a sign that you have a smaller-than-ideal duct system; But if it makes a lot of noise when running, it could mean there is a motor or internal parts that are worn out in your heating and cooling system. But persistent bumps or buzzes are an indication that your HVAC system needs to be upgraded.

5) You constantly struggle against different room temperatures.

Irregular heating or cooling is usually an indication that your HVAC system isn’t operating in the way it is required. Again, this can be a duct system problem, particularly air leaks that can be sealed with a simple repair. It can also mean that your HVAC system is not able to produce enough cooling or heating air to distribute throughout your home or may have poor insulation. In these cases, it is recommended to call an HVAC specialist to identify the problem and ask whether or not a full HVAC upgrade is needed.

6) You smell irritating odors.

Do you smell unpleasant or strange smells emanating from your vents or HVAC unit? Odors can be produced by many types of hindrances, such as mildew growth and mold due to excess condensation inside the refrigerant leaks or unit. But when the conditioner struggles to function along with the smell, it may also fail to remove moisture or produce heat efficiently and therefore leave the house feeling damp. Humidity issues can also be the result of having an air conditioner too large for your space. But in any of such cases, an HVAC upgrade may be applied.

7) The HVAC unit requires frequent repairs.

Many of the individual parts of an HVAC system are repairable and replaceable. But all HVAC systems will eventually wear out and require a complete replacement. And when a compressor, motor, or coil fails, it’s more worth replacing than repairing it. The cost of parts, as well as the labor to repair these essential components of your system, are high.

While the initial cost of a completely new system seems like a lot, the cost of constant repairs when one of these parts fails isn’t worth it in the long run. It’s better to invest that money in a whole new HVAC design. And when you get that system, make sure a professional helps you maintain it to prolong the life of your investment.

Above all, if the air conditioner does not improve the way you feel at home, there is something wrong. If this is the case, in addition to the problems indicated above, it is perhaps time to change it for a more modern one.

  1. It was informative when you mentioned that many parts of an HVAC system are replaceable. I would think that it would be a good idea to get a new system if you need to replace some of your HVAC system’s parts. Replacing the system seems like it would be more affordable in the long run.
